Kingshott Scores First Win in Australian Pro Series

Kingshott’s car speed became obvious from the start of the night, claiming third quickest behind Revolution Racegear Quick Time winner, Mark Brown and South Australian surprise package, Jamie Crouch.
Coming off a clean sweep in the domestic series at his home track of the Perth Motorplex last weekend, Kingshott’s Bunbury Subaru team headed east knowing that it was all new territory ahead. However the Speedway City 430 metre bullring played straight into the hands of the aggressive young gun, who sparred with eventual runner up, Mark Brown for 12 laps into the 30 lap feature, before making the move that would catapult him to the freedom of a ten car-length lead,  while Brown, eventual third place getter Lee Redmond and GRD’s Travis Mills battled for the minor placings.
Kingshott’s strategy was foiled however by a series of blows and rolls that brought on the ambers four times, including a violent roll-over for Scott Glazebrook, and a heartbreaking right-rear blowout for Jamie Crouch who had reached as high as fourth earlier in the race.
But with 6 laps to go, reports came during a stoppage of varied tyre wear amongst the top four, with Kingshott’s gamble with the harder D20 providing the confidence to drive a little harder out of the turns than Brown who only had a D15 in his artillery and had slipped back to third behind Lee Redmond.
However, Brown took one last gamble as Redmond’s untidy exit out of turn four in the second last lap provided the gap he needed to cross the stripe with a completely bald right rear and claim second over Redmond and the hard charging Travis Mills, who was pleased to have a return to form and comfortably bag a top five finish ahead of a rewarding fifth placing for West Aussie Paul Robinson.
The fourth round shuffled the championship points to have Mark Brown the series leader on 1080 points, just 40 ahead of Kingshott and Lee Redmond in third on 1004. Reigning Australian champ Neville Lance is looming on a distant 871 points in a virtual fourth spot after USA tourist Casey Shuman has exited the series, while the heartbreak hero, Scott Glazebrook is still in the hunt only three points behind on 868.
The Pro Series continues next Saturday December 7 when the circus travels to the speedcar-friendly 360 metre Murray Machining and Sheds Murray Bridge Speedway as part of the Tim Crouch Memorial, and a Monster Truck and Freestyle Motocross Family Spectacular. Check out www.murraybridgespeedway.com for event details andwww.speedcarproseries.com to keep up with all the Pro Series news!
Blog Editors note:  Conspicuous in their absence were the U.S. drivers that won the first 3 rounds of the Pro Series.  Alex Bright, Casey Shuman, and Davey Ray won the first 3 events in the series.  Perhaps the Americans were missing due to the Turkey Grand Prix run about 30 hours earlier.  Still Shuman ranks 4th and Bright 7th in the Speedcar Pro Series point standings.

DARLAND DODGES TROUBLE TO WIN 73RD "TURKEY NIGHT GRAND PRIX"

Winning car on its side, DD heads for Victory Lane
Credit: Bill Gardner

Perris, California.…..Dave Darland added to his legacy and joined select company in Thursday night’s 73rd “Turkey Night Grand Prix” at Perris Auto Speedway. The Lincoln, Indiana veteran avoided a late-race mishap for leader Damion Gardner to win the 98-lap classic and join Mel Kenyon and Stan Fox as the only drivers to win the Thanksgiving race on both dirt and pavement.

Darland took the lead a lap after halfway but appeared to be headed for a runner-up finish until Gardner lost a left-rear wheel on lap 95. He maneuvered the final four circuits unchallenged and won by .823-seconds in the Keith Ford-owned King Racing Products – A&A Precision Machine #73 Ellis/Fontana.

“It was definitely a roller-coaster race. Gardner was definitely strong, and it looked like he had it won. We were lucky to get past him when he broke and it was the break we needed. It’s great to win this race on dirt after winning it before on pavement. I’ve had a great time running for Keith & Josh Ford and their crew chief Jimmy May, so I’m happy to get them their first Turkey Night win. This place has been pretty good to me,” Darland said.

Parker Price-Miller took the pole with a new track record of 16.889 seconds, and it was fellow race rookie Andrew Felker beating him off the front row to take the early lead. Felker led comfortably in the early going, as cars diced behind him. The first 26 laps went green, as Darren Hagen moved to the second spot ahead of Caleb Armstrong, Brad Sweet, and Darland.

The race fought through some cautions after that point, with torrid racing at the front while under green. The front five raced under a blanket, and Darland finally slid his way into the lead on lap 50. The next lap, Felker jumped the cushion and shredded his left-rear tire.

After that, the groove moved to the high side as Gardner threw a slide-job on Hagen for the second spot. Those two swapped spots as the race hit lap 75, after which yellows were no longer counted.

With 17 to go, Hagen stopped with issues and left the fight up front to Darland, Gardner, Sweet, Armstrong, and a hard-charging Zach Daum. On the restart, Gardner threw the big slider on Darland for the lead and it stuck, despite Darland trying a cross-over off turn-two. 2013 Honda National Dirt Midget champion Christopher Bell then joined the action with the top-five, but he stopped on lap 85 and retired from the event.

As the race went green for ten straight laps, Gardner was unrivaled at the front as Darland and Armstrong raced for second. Sweet and Gardner went at it for fourth at the same time. Coming to complete lap 95, Gardner lost his left-rear wheel in turn-four and stopped suddenly right in front of Darland and Armstrong, who narrowly missed him.

On the final restart, Darland got the jump as Sweet took advantage of Armstrong’s slow restart to vie for second. He held off Armstrong but had nothing for the lead, finishing second in the Esslinger Engineering – Factory Kahne #67z Breka/Esslinger.

2011 Turkey Night champ Armstrong finished a strong third in the C&A Motorsports – Winfield #7c Beast/Stanton Toyota. Daum ended up fourth in the Daum Crop Insurance – Weld Wheels #5D Eagle/Stanton Toyota, and 2013 Western Midget champ Ronnie Gardner rounded out the top-five in the Baldozier Racing – Schroeder Torsion Bars #68 Stewart/Esslinger.

“Don Basile Rookie of the Race” honors went to Tanner Thorson, who finished tenth.

Chris Bell looks to add POWRi Midgets’ Battle at the Center victory to 2013 win list

Du QUOIN, Ill. | Nov. 26, 2013 - Chris Bell has been sensational in his first full season driving a Midget, winning the Honda USAC National Midget Dirt championship and four features in a partial schedule in POWRi Lucas Oil National Midgets. The 18-year-old from Norman, Okla., will be racing to add the fourth annual Great Clips Battle at the Center, an all-star type non-points event promoted by POWRi, to his list of victories on Dec. 7 on the one-sixth Mini Magic Mile at the Southern Illinois Center.

“The Battle at the Center is always tough with large car counts and it’s always getting bigger and better,” Bell said. “Your car can get trapped in a hard heat race and get buried in the field. You need some luck. I had a ton of fun last year (finishing 13th in the feature). It’s really a fun race, the track is really fun and (POWRi co-founder) Kenny Brown does an awesome job with the track. It would be a cool race to win.”

Bell didn’t have a Midget win prior to 2013. He ran six events with one top-10, 11 events with two top-fives and five top-10s in 2012 with POWRi’s Midgets. Bell was a surprise choice to move into a Keith Kunz/Curb-Agajanian Motorsports’ Bullet-Toyota, one of the prized rides in Midget racing, for the 2013 season to race primarily for the USAC crown and run a large chunk of the POWRi schedule. He has seven USAC victories going into Thursday’s Turkey Night Grand Prix at Perris (Calif.) Auto Speedway, the final event of the USAC season.

“I owe it all to Keith,” Bell said. “What he’s done for me has allowed me to show what I can do. Winning the USAC championship is really cool. It’s been kind of like a dream come true. When I was running Micros, I would get on the Internet and watch USAC and dream about running with the best of the best and now I’m racing with the guys I used to look up to as a little kid.”

With Kunz preparing for the Lucas Oil Chili Bowl in January, Bell will be driving a Spike-Toyota, one of Austin Brown’s KBR Racing cars, in the Battle of the Center. Bell will rejoin Kunz in the Chili Bowl in Tulsa, Okla.

“It will be different driving one of the KBR cars instead of Keith’s, but I’m sure the KBR team will do an awesome job,” Bell said. “It will get me ready for the indoor season.”

Before he reached full-time status in Midgets, the biggest victory of Bell’s career was in the 66 Mike Phillips Memorial in a $10,000-to-win POWRi Speedway Motors 600cc Outlaw Micro Series event at Southern Illinois Raceway in Marion in 2011.

“It definitely helped put me on the map,” Bell said. “Any time you race for $10,000, it’s a big deal. It was the first time it brought attention to me in the Micros. It helped calm me down in the car, knowing I could lead and win with that kind of money on the line. It was a big confidence builder.”

The Battle at the Center on Dec. 7 will have a 40-lap feature and will be broadcast on MAVTV American Real on a date to be determined.

The Southern Illinois Center is located on the Du Quoin State Fairgrounds. Front gates open at 3 p.m. CST, hot laps begin at 5 p.m. CST with racing immediately following. General admission tickets are $20 and children 12-and-under are free.

USAC SEASON CONCLUDES THURSDAY AT PERRIS

“TURKEY NIGHT GRAND PRIX” REACHES 73
Thursday night’s 73rd “Turkey Night Grand Prix” at Perris (Calif.) Auto Speedway concludes the 2013 USAC racing season. Drivers Christopher Bell of Norman, Okla. and Ronnie Gardner of Norco, Calif. are poised to celebrate Honda championships. Bell leads the National Dirt standings and Gardner leads the Western points. The titles would be the first for both.
Thursday’s 98-lap race continues a tradition begun in 1934 and spanning a variety of southern California facilities. After a 1996 race at Perris won by Billy Boat, it returned to the half-mile dirt oval for last year’s classic, captured by Kyle Larson.
The history of the race features many highlights, including Ron Shuman’s amazing record eight victories and Boat’s three wins in success at three different venues. Champions include Indianapolis 500 winners Bill Vukovich, Johnnie Parsons, A.J. Foyt and Parnelli Jones as well as USAC’s all-time National Midget leader Mel Kenyon and recent stars Jason Leffler and Tony Stewart and 2013 USAC National Champions Bobby East (Silver Crown) and Bryan Clauson (Sprint).
Clauson has established himself as one of those to beat Thursday after amassing 22 total UAC feature wins this season. That’s the second-largest single-season victory total in USAC history behind the 24 of J.J. Yeley in 2003.
Darren Hagen established the one-lap track record drivers will seek during qualifications. His pole-winning lap last year was 17.025 seconds. Hagen earned his fourth consecutive Honda USAC National Pavement title this year.

Sleepy sits on top of the Western States Feature list with 104 wins.

National Midget Racing Hall of Fame to induct 8 at Chili Bowl

2008 Hall of Fame Class
Eight more inductees have been announced for the National Midget Auto Racing Hall of Fame, scheduled for induction ceremonies at a January 17 luncheon during the Chili Bowl.
The mix of drivers, car owners and officials will officially be honored during ceremonies held on the Tulsa State Fairgrounds on Friday of “Chili Bowl” weekend in the Oklahoma City.

This year’s inductees include (in alphabetical order) Wayne Adams, Emil Andres, George Benson, Dan Boorse, Dominic Distarce, Les Kimbrell, Cletus “Cowboy” O’Rourke and Jigger Sirois.
A legendary figure in Chicago-area Midget media, Adams enjoyed more than four decades of announcing, officiating, photographing and writing the sport. Among his many duties was serving as the chief announcer for the highly-popular races at Chicago’s Soldier Field.

Andres, a regular member of the “Chicago Gang” in 1930s and 1940s Midget racing, graduated to prominence in Stock car and Championship racing. Among his victories were the 100-mile Springfield, Ill Championship race and a 100-miler in 1948 at the Milwaukee Mile. He was honored by the Indianapolis 500 Oldtimers with their 1997 Louis Meyer Award.
Benson capped a stellar Midget racing career with his 1969 victory in the prestigious “Turkey Night Grand Prix” at Ascot Park in Gardena, Calif. A pioneer builder as well, his 35-year career included a pair of CRA Sprint victories and other regional Midget titles.
Boorse earned seven championships in the tough Badger Midget Racing Association. His 50-year career included prestigious wins in the 1999 and 2003 Chili Bowl Championship in Tulsa, Okla. and the 1984 and 1999 Pepsi Midget Nationals at Sun Prairie, Wisc.

Distarce, who served the American Automobile Association as an official, actually served as the race organizer for the first professional Midget race ever held, in 1933 at Loyola High School Stadium in Los Angeles, Calif. As a chief starter he was in the stand on the fateful day of Rex Mays’ demise at Del Mar, Calif. in 1949 and he was also features as a starter in the racing epic To Please A Lady, starring Clark Gable and Barbara Stanwyck.
Les Kimbrell was instrumental in the area of scoring for many years, officiating as hundreds of Midget races and at the annual Indianapolis 500. Kimbrell was the official scorer on the stand January 8, 1956, when the first USAC race was conducted at the Memorial Coliseum in Fort Wayne, Ind. He later served in various offices as a board member for the National Midget Auto Racing Hall of Fame.

O’Rourke recorded a number of Midget wins during the 1930s and 1940s, including a spectacular upside-down victory over Duke Nalon at the Chicago Field Artillery Armory in 1937. In 1951 he was named the champion at the Chicago International Amphitheater.
Sirois drove a variety of race cars and in 1961 he captured the UARA Midget title, which included four track championships. A 100-mile race on the Milwaukee Mile and an open-competition Midget Series title at Daytona Beach, Fla. were also part of his repertoire, but in 1969 his aborted qualifying run for the Indianapolis 500 earned notoriety as he would have been on the pole for the race had he completed the run!

Oklahoma's Hometown Team for the Chili Bowl - Sooner 1 Racing

The University of Oklahoma is going to field a two car team in the 2014 Chili Bowl.  You can follow them on Twitter
Sooner One Racing tee shirts are now for sale! ($20) Orders may be placed by sending an email to courtboggs@ou.edu

It would certainly be great to see other schools join in; particularly those from hotbeds of midget racing.  Stand up Indiana, Pennsylvania, California, etc.  The Sooners are jumping into our game.

This would be particularly cool since there are a few drivers that are granted preliminary night considerations because they are presently enrolled in various Universities.

Welcome Sooners!
